"My Busy Kit" winners & sick mom advice?

Congratulations to my two lucky “My Busy Kit” winners this morning! These fearless family travelers were selected at random using Random.org:

Dawn, entry #24, who will be traveling to Key West with a toddler for Christmas, is winner of the custom-created “My Busy Kit.”

Rachael, entry #7 on the Travels with Baby Facebook fan page, who will be traveling from Washington D.C. to Phoenix in a few weeks with two kids at 3 ½ and 1 ½ years old (stand-by?!), is winner of the “My Airport Busy Kit.”

Ladies, please contact me ASAP so we can get these kits to you.

Everybody else, remember there is still time to order your own custom “Busy Kits” in time for holiday travel with your children! Thanks so much to our sponsor, My Busy Kits. I am certainly looking forward to busting out our kits in a couple of days.

Meanwhile, got any advice for me?

Ironically, I was posting tips on travel with sick kids last week (click here if you missed it). It looks like I overlooked the possibility of travel with sick mom! (I know, moms aren’t allowed to get sick.) Any of you doctors, pediatricians, and other moms in the know have tips for me on decongestants that are safe while breastfeeding? (Or cough suppressants for that matter?) I usually steer clear of all of the above, but at 30,000 feet it may get a little dicey.

Time to get packing. There is a vacation at the end of this tunnel!

Safe journey,

Shelly Rivoli, author of the award-winning guide Travels with Baby

Hi, I was a sick mom flying long haul with 2 sick toddlers while breastfeeding. Dr told me the traces of medicine in breastmilk are not harmful to the baby, but I didn't try it. I use a saline spray called Sterimar (UK product but there is probably a US version) that worked really well & comes in 100ml bottle. I also used Ear Planes earplugs for ascent & descent. I had no ear pain but I couldn't hear very well for a week. Hope you start feeling better.

Congrats again, Dawn. Thanks, Nancy! I am a big fan of saline nasal spray (particularly for the kiddos) and never fly without it! I've also been dipping into my "baby rub" for myself! Oooh, will they love the soothing smell of me on the airplane! ;-)

Luden's cherry throat drops just have pectin, no meds, and are nice for sore throat and cough. I like Hall's 'defense' citrus drops too (no meds, just extra vitamin c).

Also, I've never tried it, but I hear nasal irrigation (like saline spray, except you pour it through your nose with a 'neti pot') is really effective for clearing out congestion. Might be tough to manage in the airport/on the plane, but probably worth doing right before you leave.

Good luck!

The spray I mentioned is a sea water nasal irrigation in pressurized spray form. Hardcore (not for kids) but it really does work. Ever had a wave hit you in the face?

Nice story as for me. It would be great to read more about that topic.
